Endoscopy

The Adventist Medical Center features an endoscopy room equipped with high-definition endoscopy systems to perform procedures such as gastroscopies and colonoscopies. The center’s flexible timetable allows busy patients to easily arrange examinations at times that are suited to their schedules.

The center’s equipment reprocessing zones follow the guidelines and standards adopted by Hong Kong Adventist Hospital, with clear distinctions between the dirty zone, reprocessing zone, cleaning zone, and disinfected equipment storage area. Used endoscopy equipment are thoroughly disinfected before entering the cleaning zone, and then stored in the disinfected equipment storage area, thereby maintaining a high level of sterilization and protecting the health of patients.

What is an endoscopy?

Endoscopy is a minimally invasive diagnostic procedure that evaluates the interior surfaces of an organ using a small scope inserted through one of the body's orifices. Doctors can directly see the lesion through the scope, take small biopsies, retrieve foreign objects, or perform other minimally invasive treatment procedures. Many patients may be anxious about the procedure, but much of the pain and discomfort is alleviated through the use of light sedatives.

Colonoscopy

Studies show that approximately 85% of all colorectal cancers evolve from colonic polyps. These polyps may transform into cancer over a period of 10 years, so it is important to identify and remove colonic polyps within this time period to prevent their progression to cancer.

A colonoscopy is recommended for anyone aged 50 or above and those at high risk for developing colorectal cancer. Those with no risk factors or have had a normal initial colonoscopy are recommended to undergo a colonoscopy every 10 years.

A colonoscopy helps to investigate, identify, or treat various lower gastrointestinal tract problems, such as:

Colonic polyps
Colon cancer
Inflammatory bowel diseases (ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease)
Haemorrhoids
Diverticulosis
Removal of colonic polyps

Gastroscopy (Oesophago-gastro-duodenoscopy, or OGD)
